A green scene for the Irish down Nelson Streets

Guinness is the drink of choice today as many Nelson bars have had a shamrock shakeup in celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day.

Although not everybody is choosing to strut some green it’s hard to miss those going about their everyday business with an Irished up pair of socks or a sparkly emerald hat.

Bunches of green balloons line the exterior of some nelson pubs and inside is where you will find those who have really gone all out.

The Wakatu Hotel kicked off early with live music and plenty of Guinness. Other bar’s staff say they are still waiting for the after work rush but wait staff are poised for a busy night.

Owner of The Prince Albert, Nani Denardin, says the crowds vary depending on wether or not Saint Patrick’s falls on a weekend.

She says they always go through a massive amount of Guinness.

“Every Saint Patrick’s Day we go through 250L of the stuff.”

Nelson Live visited some of these bars to get a glimpse of the Saint Patrick’s spirit.
