Throwback Thursday: Rocks Road

It’s hard to imagine Nelson without a drive down the beautiful and iconic Rocks Road.

The road was in the pipeline as early as 1878, but it wasn’t until the election of Nelson Mayor, Francis Trask in 1890 that the ball began rolling.

Two years later, during Nelson’s jubilee year, construction began on the road. Most of the road was made by gangs of prisoners  who were marched from Shelbourne Street to the site, one of which attempted a failed escape.

The 1.6 kilometer road was completed in 1893.
