The finale to the Nelson Arts Festival took place on Sunday, and drew the curtain on the event that saw thousands of people attend different shows, and events over the two weeks.

Director Sophie Kelly says the festival was fantastic and drew significantly more numbers than previous years, with many people making trips from out of town, especially for the Labour Weekend events.

Founders Park hosted the nautically themed finale event that saw the community dress up for the occasion, and featured pirate battles, sailor dancing, and treasure hunts.

The Nelson Arts Festival put on 92 events at local Nelson and regional locations, and Sophie says it’s great to put on so many events for the public to enjoy.

“It’s absolutely fantastic to pull it all together.”

Grace Rassekhi, 10, of Hira said she enjoyed the finale which had “heaps of stuff for big and little kids” to do, and Selina Max of Wakefield says the day at Founders was a great way to finish the festival off.

Sophie says the annual masked parade, which drew thousands of participants and spectators was a standout event for the festival and “an absolute highlight to watch.”
