Water has spilled out on Hardy Street after what is believed to be a mains pipe blew at around 1.30pm today.

The road was closed off briefly by fire crew and the footpath remains closed.

Senior station officer Craig Davies says businesses on the street have been affected by the flooding and the footpath has lifted up from the break.

“It’s come through the footpath and started to come through the shops. We shut the road off and made the scene safe.”

He says he is unsure if the burst pipe is mains water or a breakage in a fire hydrant.

“The fire hydrant has a hole in the footpath, it’s probably that but it’s hard to tell before they dig under it which they are doing it now.”
