‘New Zealand Fairy Tale’ comes to Wakefield

A “good old village style” show with a picnic element is ready to bring some life to the Wakefield Hall this month.

‘Kiwifruits’ by the Wakefield Country Players is based in a Kiwi pub with two drag queens telling a Cinderella-themed story.

Directed by Hugh Neill, it follows Fay Gay who tells a very enthusiastic younger drag performer, Tatiania, the story of how The Castle Road Tavern was turned from a working man’s pub into a venue for spectacular drag shows.

The show was supposed to be performed in March, but it was cancelled because of the Covid-19 lockdown, says production manager Deidre Johnson.

“But we are back better than before – everybody has been waiting to get back on stage.”

She says it will be a “picnic show” where people can bring their own food, cutlery, crockery, and wine glasses.

“Doors open at 6.30pm so people can sit around and have something to eat and drink before the show starts at 7.30pm. Tea and coffee will be provided during intermission.”

‘Kiwifruits’ is on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 November and then Wednesday 18, Friday 20 and Saturday 21 November.

Tickets for the R16 show are $20. To book, email [email protected] or phone (03) 5418869.
