‘Eclectic’ Nelson band to rock The Boathouse

An Nelson five-piece band are celebrating Level 1 in style with a launch gig at The Boathouse this weekend.

Sonoraw play original music as well as well-known covers by artists such as Adele, Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, The Doobie Brothers, The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Alanis Morrisette and Queen.

Drummer Geoffrey Douglas describes their sound as “adult contemporary”.

“We play quite an eclectic mix, as we’ve all contributed, and they are all songs that we enjoy.”

Geoffrey is joined in the band by guitarist David Turnhout, lead vocalist Betsy Hill, pianist Amy Cunningham and Daryl Thompson on bass guitar.

Both Geoffrey and Daryl hail from the Nelson band, Medicine Woman.

David says Sonoraw originally started out with just him and Betsy as a duet.

“Then we got to know Geoffrey when he recorded and produced our first song, ‘Square One Again’, and Amy and I used to be in a band together called Money for Jam, so she asked to come and play with us.”

David says, despite being together almost a year and playing numerous gigs – such as the Nelson Wine and Food Festival – they haven’t had an “official” launch as a band.

“We wanted to get our music out there,” says David.

“As well as covers we’ll also be putting in a couple of existing originals and we’ve also got an original that Amy has written that we’re going to play for the first time.”

And with Alert Level 1 now here, they are encouraging people to “come out, have fun and support local music.”

The Sonoraw Launch Party is on Saturday, 3 October from 8:30pm. Tickets are $15 via Facebook and some door sales may be available.
