Stoke mums connect through fitness

A new circuit class in Stoke is aiming to help mums connect, as well as helping them with their fitness goals.

The Mums and Bubs Circuit Class kicks off at the Pūtangitangi Greenmeadows Centre at the end of the month.

The idea was sparked by local mum Jenny Hunter, who has a three-month-old daughter, Nellie.

“I live in this community and want to see our young families becoming more connected,” she says.

“With Covid-19 there has been no antenatal classes and not many opportunities for new mums to meet each other.”

She took the idea to the centre, with manager Gareth Cashin eager to support it.

“It’s an exciting opportunity. We want the centre to meet the needs of our community,” he says.

The course will be led by Odette Petzold, who hopes to create a fun and flexible atmosphere.

“We’ll get outside for some stroller walks where we’ll do lunges and we’ll stop and do little exercises. It just shows how versatile working out with your baby can be.”

The class will then head indoors where there will be a focus on posture and pelvic exercises.

“All the exercises are built so you can be holding your baby or have you lying next to your baby,” says Odette.

“It’s about reconnecting with your body, and a big part of it is very much to do with mental and emotional wellness.”

The class is designed for mums with babies aged six weeks to nine months old and will run on Mondays from 10:15am – 11.15am, starting 28 September.

The cost is $10 per class with a casual ‘come when you can’ focus. You need to bring a yoga mat, water bottle, a baby mat/car seat and your stroller.

Attendees need to fill out a form before attending though as Odette says she needs to know where participants are physically.

Jenny says she hopes other new mums will come and give it a go.

“It will be a good way to start off the week, and you don’t have to be super fit to participate.”
