After nearly 50 years the Nelson Cat Club has officially shut down.
Club committee members donated the remaining funds from their bank account – $8800, to the Nelson SPCA last week to finalise the closure.
They also donated a storage container which SPCA manager Donna Walzl says is very appreciated and much needed.
Donna says she was “absolutely thrilled” with the donation and says the funds will hopefully go a long way to helping complete the upgrade of the cat area.
Founding member Pat Pepperell, along with current committee members, presented the cheque to the Nelson SPCA last week.
Formed in 1974, the Cat Club ran the annual Cat Show that at its peak attracted hundreds of entries from across the country.
With numbers and interest in the club slowly dwindling, the decision was made to shutdown the club after it failed to form a committee.
Long-time members say it will leave a big hole in the community.
