Keeping community art alive in Nelson

For the past 20 years, Faye Wulff has ensured that everyone in Nelson has had access to the arts – but the Community Art Works coordinator says she needs a boost in funding to keep it up.

The organisation is the latest nominee for the Car Company’s Charity Drive, which sees $10,000 up for grabs for community organisations.

“It would help enormously,” says Faye. “We could stop gasping for air.”

Located in the former Hunting and Fishing building in Whakatu Square, Community Art Works is a hub for Nelson’s art scene.

Along with creating pieces for events such as the Christmas parade, Matariki and the Lantern parade, they also help Nelson’s most vulnerable residents.

“We give people a reason to get up in the morning.

“We are making a difference and that’s what makes it worth it.”

Faye says more funding is needing for the day-to-day running of the organisation.

The Car Company’s Charity Drive launched earlier this month and local organisations are invited to apply until 6 April.

Application forms are available at www.carcompanynelson.co.nz or at Car Company branches in Nelson, Richmond and Tahunanui.
