The sun was shining on a day dedicated to remembering those who have gone before us.

Dia de los Muertos – Day of the Dead was celebrated at Founders Heritage Park on Sunday.

Organiser Jesus Ruiz Lopez says the day celebrated the afterlife and was a chance to connect with those who had passed. He says it is always special being able to share part of his culture with the Nelson community.

“Inside we are all just skeletons, so you need to enjoy life and remember that we are here, and we are alive.”

Eight-year-old Poppy Sheehan returned to the festival after a successful first year selling handmade sugar skulls in 2018.

She says this year a piece of advice had been offered to her customers after feedback from her previous creations – “you can eat them”.
