Nelson’s own hip hop stars will soon be dancing their way to The Netherlands after qualifying for the world championships.

Iconic, made up of Andrews sisters Shylah, 11, and Zariyah, 12, won the duo section of the national Unite Hip Hop Championships last month and were then selected to strut their stuff on the world stage.

Coach Gemma Laing says it was great news for the girls, who had trained so hard.

“Having two people on stage, it is so important to have things as close to perfect as possible. There is no hiding.”

Iconic made the Unite World Champs last year and came 11th. This year they are aiming for top six. But they will have their work cut out for them as some countries are renowned for sending some amazing teams, Gemma says.

Just to try and give them an edge they have also brought on an Auckland-based choreographer.

“It’s about them improving and expanding their skills.”

The group will be fundraising for the next few months and looking for opportunities to perform as much as possible.

Gemma says the pair don’t get to perform as much as they would like to so any chance to get on stage is much appreciated.
