Jill Sanson was in shock most of the long weekend.
“I’ve never won anything before, so this is a real treat.”
The Stoke semi-retiree was racking her brains thinking of what Nelson store she entered the Shop n Win competition. Then she realised that she probably owed a debt of gratitude to her 79-year-old husband, George, who may have done the buying while she did the entering.
Her name was chosen at random by the local police out of the hundreds of entries over the past month.
The $5000 shopping spree across Nelson shops is a welcome surprise as it’s also Jill’s birthday on Friday.
“I thought I would just enter to just fill in time, I never thought I’d win.”
But she still wasn’t sure where the winning purchase came from.
The runners up, winning a $500 House of Travel voucher and a $200 dining voucher were Gill Loxton and Warwick Bruce.
The competition was run by Nelson Weekly in conjunction with Uniquely Nelson.
The Weekly’s managing director Andrew Board says it’s great to see the prize go to a deserving couple and hopes they enjoy some of the best that Nelson shops have to offer.
The Sansons describe themselves as “just ordinary people” who love the outdoors and live for their six grandchildren.
But they also keep busy, having shrugged off retirement several times. George helps organise drivers for a local rental car company while Jill does demonstrations at supermarkets.
“I love my job actually,” she says. “I’ve retired three times, but I couldn’t handle it.”
The couple were planning on getting away to Picton for the long weekend.
“You have to go away and recharge,” George says. “That’s important.”
No doubt a shopping spree will help with that too.
