Losing locks for fight against cancer

Having lost his father to the disease, Simon Collins had no hesitation in signing up to shave his head for cancer research.

Simon was joined by local real estate agent Jo Hender and musician Bryce Wasteney in losing their locks to help fundraise for the cause.

The trio are members of the networking group the Business Boosters and Jo suggested the shave at one of their weekly meetings.

“She managed to rope a few of us in,” says Simon.

The shave was carried out at Elise Hair Design on Thursday afternoon.

“It was a no-brainer and I look good without hair,” Simon joked.

Bryce says it has been 20 long years since he last sported a shaved head so it will take some getting used to.

“It feels very light, I’m worried that my dog won’t recognise me.”

He says after recently singing for a terminal cancer patient, the indiscriminate nature of the disease hit home.

“It just takes people too young. It was shocking to see him so skinny, weak and without hair, it made me realise that they need all the support they can get.”

Jo says the shave was a very “little thing in the big picture”.

The team had raised $1376 on the day of the shave and they expected this to rise throughout the month.
