After more than a year, 20,000 downloads and an awards haul, the Nelson App has been given a makeover.

The app, which was first launched in June last year and has more than 22,000 downloads, has just been updated to reflect the way Nelsonians want to consume their news and information.

The app is the foundation of the Nelson Weekly Ltd’s digital strategy and seeks to put what locals want to know in the palm of their hand.

Managing director Andrew Board says that the app was always about making sure Nelsonians felt connected to what was going on in the region.

“The new platform makes that even easier. Not only does it update our news faster, but it also allows readers to share stories across social media.”

Andrew says the popularity of the app shows that it is something that Nelsonians were crying out for.

“Whether its breaking news or sport, latest weather forecasts, fishing information, mountainbike tracks, activities for kids, local attractions, movie listings, funeral notices, job listings, real estate or the nearest restaurants, cafes and bars to you – Nelson App has it all.”

The app was a large part of the company’s recent wins at the New Zealand Community Newspaper Association Awards for innovation and the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Business Awards for “smart business”.

Editor Charles Anderson says that the app allows reporters to put everything that readers want to know in one place, quickly and efficiently.

“We know that our readers love to know what is going on. That can range from reading about their favourite local sports team or finding out about what the traffic is doing before they head away on a long weekend.”

Charles says the app’s reporters are all dedicated to breaking news and covering the region. “The new platform just means we can do that better.”
