Nelson Weekly reporter awarded top journalism prize

Nelson Weekly sports reporter Jonty Dine has been named the Provincial Sports Reporter of the Year at the prestigious TP McLean Sports Journalism Awards.

The awards, held in Auckland last week, brought together the best and brightest in the field from across print, digital, television and radio.

Jonty, who has been with the Weekly and the Nelson App since March, brought home the top award for community and provincial publications.

His work ranged from a story on how concussion had ended the playing career of a Mako star to how junior sports teams were amending their rules to better fit with changing philosophies in education.

Jonty says he has thoroughly enjoyed covering sport in Nelson this year and getting to know some truly world class athletes the region continues to produce.

“It has been a privilege to tell their stories.”

Weekly editor Charles Anderson says that the award recognises the great work that Jonty has been putting into the sports community every week.

“He is on the ground, out there telling stories that otherwise would slip by. He has been doing a fantastic job of covering a vast array of diverse sport that really sum up what the region is all about.”

Charles says the exciting thing is that Jonty has a lot more potential and Nelson Weekly Ltd plans to ensure that sport coverage increases in the newspaper and in the Nelson App in the new year and beyond.

“We are looking forward to seeing what Jonty can do.”

The award caps off a big year for the city’s only locally-owned newspaper.

In June it won two top prizes at the Community Newspaper Association of New Zealand Awards and in November it won the award for clever business at the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.
