A woman who crashed her car on Rocks Rd last month appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday charged with careless driving and driving with excess blood alcohol.
Kelly McGuire was driving her Mini early in the hours of August 21, in poor weather conditions, when she collided with the back of a parked car on Rocks Rd.
Representing herself in court, she says the incident has made her realise she has an issue with alcohol.
“I made a very bad choice that night to hop in a car knowing that I had had too much to drink, I am just pleased that I didn’t hurt anyone.”
She was transported to Nelson Hospital with a foot injury, where she had a blood sample taken which returned a reading of 151mlg/100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mlg.
She says she’s lost “quite a bit” due to the accident, including her car which insurance won’t cover.
Judge Richard Russell convicted her and sentenced her to 80 hours of community service and disqualified her from driving for six months. She was also fined $200 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.
