Opera is making a triumphant return to the Theatre Royal this month.
Marlborough based Cavalcade Productions is performing ‘Opera Unboxed’ for one show only on Wednesday 16 May.
It’s the first time the Theatre Royal has had a ‘proper’ opera since reopening in 2010, with four NZ Opera colleagues presenting an evening of music from the worlds of grand opera and musical theatre.
Director and baritone Robert Tucker from Blenheim will be joined by New York based mezzo Rachelle Pike, Auckland singer/actress Helen Medlyn, and Wellington tenor Declan Cudd.
They will be accompanied by Wellington-based pianist Catherine Norton the big Steinway.
Helen Medlyn, who has been a frequent performer at Nelson’s Opera in the Park, says she’s delighted to be coming back to Nelson.
“We are all very excited to be bringing opera back to the Theatre Royal, and I think the audience will enjoy the variety of songs we have planned,” she says.
“It’s mostly opera, with some lighter stuff. There will be solos and duets – it’s a bit of everything really.”
Opera Unboxed is on at the Theatre Royal on Wednesday 16 May, 7.30pm. Tickets available from www.ticketdirect.co.nz
