Another tough weekend for batsmen

Another weekend, another terrible day for batting averages.

Nelson Cricket’s senior club 50-over competition is only a few weeks old but low scores have been a talking point and it was no different on Saturday with scores of 54, 74 and 132.

In case any clarification is needed, those are team scores, not individual.

Over 10 innings played so far the average team score is just 105.

Wanderers were the worst performers on the weekend, eeking out 54 runs from 24 overs at the Brightwater Domain.

In response, Waimea Toi Toi United cantered to the total in under 11 overs and with the loss of just two wickets. Jon Routhan was the star, scoring an unbeaten 41 off just 35 balls

At the Botanics, Nelson College, missing many of its senior players, fell for just 74, leaving ACOB a simple run chase.

The hosts did lose four wickets on their way to victory, but nowhere near enough to trouble them.

Things were slightly better for Wakatu at the Marsden Rec, but not much.

Wakatu scored 132 before Stoke/Nayland continued its unbeaten run by reaching the total with the loss of just three wickets.

Standouts for Stoke/Nayland were Kurt Pahl with 49 and Kendall Hodson with 47, while Ili Tugaga took a five-wicket bag with the ball.
