Youth theatre takes on a classic

Nelson Youth Theatre Company is bringing a classic back to the Theatre Royal stage.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat will be brought to life by a cast of 35 local young performers, ranging in age from five to 21.

Opening night is this Sunday and the show runs for a week.

Director Richard Carruthers says that it’s the third time the company have performed the show, which tells the biblical story of Joseph, his eleven scheming brothers and his coat of many colours.

“It’s very popular – everyone loves performing it,” he says. “We have lovely strong cast and the whole show is full of energy.”

Richard says the one hour show would suit all ages, with a “kaleidoscope of catchy songs and colourful dance numbers” which parodies various musical styles from rock ‘n roll to country and western, French ballad, calypso and jazz.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat is on at the Theatre Royal from Sunday 26 November to Saturday 2 December.

Tickets are available from or the Theatre Royal.
