Pic Picot has come a long way from making peanut butter in a concrete mixer in his garage and chasing a roaster full of peanuts down his driveway.
The Nelson-based peanut butter maker is expanding once again, moving into a new site that sits on over 5000 square metres opposite Placemakers on Saxton Rd.
Currently based across four spots in Nelson, the new site being built by Coman Construction, will incorporate them all with a warehouse, factory, events foyer, offices and an overhead viewing gallery for factory tours.
Standing outside the outwards goods warehouse already operating on the new site, Pic is astounded by the size of everything. “It’s quite a statement, it’s humongous, far from what we started with.”
What began as a way to make “just a bit of pocket money for the weekend” has now expanded into a business exporting to Australia, the UK, America, China, Singapore and South East Asia, and Holland.
But Pic says New Zealand is still their biggest market.
“All of this has all been from the fantastic support we get from Nelson, it’s unbelievable really but it’s what we’ve grown to.”
The new buildings will be completed by June/July next year and the team of “picsters” will begin to transfer all the machinery and close down the other sites.
“The trick will be to get everything sorted here then shut down the factory, rush down here, plug it all in and get up and going again.”
