Beauty comp in a barn

A barn isn’t your usual hair and beauty contest venue, but for the ‘A Country Affair, with a Modern Twist’ themed Trades Academy and Trades of Primary Industries Hair & Beauty Competition, it was the perfect setting.

Forty Nelson and Blenheim students prepped their hairdressing tools and make-up brushes before going head-to-head in their first pressure-filled Hair Up, Make Up, and Photographic Lip Art events.

Nelson’s Claudia Schroder took out first place in the Hair Up Event while Teresa Laird got Highly Commended, Nicola Tyree won the Make Up event and Brooklyn Phillips took out the Photographic Lip Art event.

Event organiser and NMIT Hairdressing tutor, Linda Heath, says this year’s creations were very impressive.

“They really captured the whole theme, gave it their own twist, and scored really well with our panel of judges, and it was awesome we could hold it in the barn and really project that theme.”

She says all of the students did well.

“I don’t think many of them have been put in that position before so it was really great to see what they could do.”
