A cartoon sent to the Nelson Weekly office after an article in last week’s edition reported on a mystery artist leaving artwork at a Stoke cafe.

Nelson’s very own Banksy?

The mystery artist who leaves cartoons at a Stoke cafe has come forward — sort of.

Work from the artist was featured in last week’s Nelson Weekly, after the owners of Squires Cafe in Stoke started to collect and frame the work he left behind. The Weekly article included a note to see if anyone knew who the artist, who signs his work “Walker”, was, so it could interview him.

Instead, he sent a letter to the editor to the Weekly office in Tahunanui with no note but a cartoon about the article.

The cartoon features a man reading the Nelson Weekly and talking to a woman about the article. She opines: “Darling, it could be the next Banksy… or it’s just a weirdo.”

Weekly publisher Andrew Board says he was thrilled with the cartoon.

“It only makes it more of a mystery. I wonder what he’ll do next. He certainly has us interested, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”
