Severe weather warning predicts heavy rain and strong gales

Metservice has issued a severe weather warning over Nelson, predicting heavy rain and strong winds today and tomorrow.

Heavy rain has already fallen in Nelson overnight and is expected to continue until early Thursday morning, over this time rainfall totals could exceed 250mm in some areas.

This is a significant amount of rain and people are advised to watch out for rapidly rising rivers and streams, flooding and slips.

Nelson and Buller are expected to have the strongest winds, where severe south-east gales could reach 120 km/h in exposed places for a time during Wednesday.

Winds of this strength could cause damage to trees, powerlines and unsecured structures and make driving hazardous.
