Woman found beneath Motueka bridge has been identified

The name of the woman found dead beneath a bridge in Motueka on Sunday evening has been released.

The woman was 43-year-old Sheree Diane Archer from Palmerston North.

She was thought to be walking her dog at the edge of the Motueka River, just upstream of the main road bridge at Riwakaat the time of her death.

A passerby noticed the dead woman and a mid-sized tan and white coloured dog beneath the bridge at around 5.30pm on Sunday and notified police.

The area where Miss Archer was found is close to a public reserve on the western side of the river.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston says at this stage a scene examination has been completed but the cause of death remains unexplained.

“There were no suspicious circumstances and a post mortem has been carried out so we are awaiting the results of the toxicology test to establish the exact cause of death.”

The woman had been in the South Island for only a few days prior.

Police would like to hear from anybody who was in the area of the reserve on Sunday afternoon and may have seen Miss Archer at the river.

Anyone who may have seen Miss Archer on Sunday afternoon is asked to contact Nelson Police on 03 545 9869.
