Nelsonians are spending more money ahead of the 2016 Christmas, a total of $24.5 million was spent in Nelson through the Paymark network during the first 7 days of December.

The pre-christmas spending increased 2.7 per cent from the same week last year, in line with the national spending trend which rose 5.4 per cent as New Zealanders collectively spent $1287.7 million through Paymark.

These results point to solid growth both regionally and nationally in the early stages of the busy pre-Christmas spending period.

The biggest regional spenders were Auckland, Canterbury and Wellington with $533.8, $141.9, and $123.1 million worth of transactions.

However, annual growth was low throughout Paymark’s Marlborough region (including Kaikoura) with $14 million spent in the first week of December, a 0.4 per cent increase on last year.
