Police release photo of alleged armed robber

Nelson Police have released a photo of the man involved in last night’s alleged armed robbery of the Z service station on Halifax St.

Shortly after 8pm on Sunday, the offender entered the service station and approached the sole attendant at the counter.

Described as a european man in his 40’s or 50’s, with average height and build, a bald head and a large handlebar moustache, he had a very prominent tattoo on the side of his neck and possibly walked with a limp.

Z Energy media liaison Jonathan Hill told Fairfax this morning that the offender was armed with a gun and demanded less than $100 cash before fleeing with nothing else.

“As far as I’m aware it [the firearm] was not presented but the threat was very clearly made,” says Jonathan.

The offender left on foot and was last seen heading west along Halifax Street towards Rutherford Street.

The offenders actions were captured on CCTV, “he has a very distinctive appearance and Police are confident people in the community will know who he is,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston, Area Manager Criminal Investigations.

Police would like to hear from anybody that was in the area at the time and may have seen the offender or who knows his identity.  Information can be passed by calling the Nelson Police station on 03 5463840 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
