Tasman District Council kicks off

There were no surprises as Tim King was voted-in as deputy mayor at the 10th inaugural meeting of the Tasman District Council in Richmond on Thursday.

Mayor Richard Kempthorne recommended to the newly sworn-in council that Tim should be his deputy and that recommendation received unanimous support from the councillors. Although the meeting was largely ceremonial with a blessing by kaumatu Andy Joseph followed by the mayor and councillors taking an oath to serve the district, Richard did outline some of the challenges ahead.

Richard told councillors that continuing to provide all the key services while ensuring that rates remained affordable  was a top priority. Securing a sustainable water supply for urban and rural users and developing a fair funding model for the proposed  Lee Valley Dam were also big issues facing council.

The council will have its next meeting in Richmond on November 10.
