Rain, thunder, and grey skies have covered the region but the Coastal Highway has been hit by a small hailstorm.

The hailstorm hit around 2pm and stretched from Westdale Rd around to Gardener Valley Road, centring in Mapua with the stones described as “bigger than your average hail” by Alberta’s Mapua barista, James Ingelbrecht.

“The thunder and lightning hit quickly and then all of a sudden we had a crazy amount of hail almost being driven sideways.”

Local business owner Greg Winn was driving along the Highway when it hit and says the road was extremely slippery

“Traffic was at crawling speed, people were pulling over covered in what looked like snow and it was probably 60-70mm deep, if you’d have hit your brakes you would have locked up, it was super slippery”

With the unpredictable weather, drivers should take extra care on the road and drive to the conditions.
