Art expo to feature 150 artists

Saxton Stadium is getting ready for an influx of art lovers, with the fifth annual Art Expo Nelson opening its doors to the public this weekend.

The three-day expo will feature 150 artists from all around New Zealand exhibiting and selling artworks, and event organiser Nic Foster says that more than half the artists are from out of town, which will make for an exciting experience for visitors.

“These are artists whose works we haven’t seen here before and perhaps not again for another year, and we’ve also got some very talented local artists” he says.

“Like previous years, we expect to see lots of people over the weekend enjoying the art, meeting the artists and staying for a few hours to really soak up the atmosphere.”

He says that every day will be different, as artists replace the work that they have sold with something different.

“It means the scenery keeps changing, which is ideal for art lovers who like to buy a weekend pass and make the most of the experience.”

Last year, more than 5500 people attended the event and 590 pieces of art were purchased.

One of this year’s local artists taking part is Hannah Starnes, who says she finds the expo the “perfect” opportunity to display her work.

“The best part about it is that you reach so many people, and there is something to suit everyone’s price range and tastes – there is art for everyone.”

Hannah will be showcasing her signature ‘barrel art’ – made from recycled wine barrel lids.

She was supplied with the lids of 20 unused barrels this winter which her Dad has done up for her to paint, while the sides of the barrels were sent away to be made into skateboard decks.

Hannah will have six of her creations for sale at the expo, and they feature a range of native birds, plants and Nelson scenes. “I love wood and I love the natural recycled part of it. I was raised in a family that really appreciates native things,” she says.

Art Expo Nelson will be held at Saxton Stadium from Saturday 22 October – Monday 24 October from 10am. Entry is $5 for adults, children under 15 free.
