The Wellington Phoenix continued their strong preseason with a 2-1 win over a 10-man Central Coast Mariners at Trafalgar Park this afternoon.

Kosta Barbarouses converted a first half penalty to open the scoring before the Mariners’ Connor Pain equalised just minutes later.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men for the last hour of the game after Jacques Faty was red carded for a challenge on Roy Krishna on the edge of the penalty area.

Roy then broke the deadlock early in the second half although the Mariners argued one of their players had cleared the ball off the line but the referee awarded it a goal.

The Phoenix were reduced to 10 men into injury time but it didn’t matter.

Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick addressed the crowd after the game and said he’s keen for the team to return to Nelson in the future.
