This afternoon the New Zealand Silver Ferns and Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls meet with hundreds of netball fans at Trafalgar Centre ahead of Sunday’s sold-out game.
Netballers from across the region were joined by their coaches, umpires, referees and parents in meeting their sporting idols.
The meet and greet opened with a Q&A session before Silver Fern captain Katrina Grant was given a key to the city and the eager fans were able to get autographs and selfies.
Security guards had to hold the barrier in place as the crowd surged forward.
Nelson College for Girls 10A netballer Lucy Palmer says meeting the Silver Ferns was incredible.
“It’s really cool to meet and get to know them, to talk to them and have them smile at you, they are really friendly.”
Among the players is Motueka-born Silver Fern, Shannon Francois who says she is looking forward to playing in front of a home court.
“I’m extremely pumped, it’s so nice to be home and hopefully we ‘re going to take the court against Jamaica.
“It’s going to be extremely tough, the Jamaicans are so athletic and fast so it’s going to be a good tough match.”
