Severe weather warning in place

Metservice has jumped straight to issuing a severe weather warning over Northwest Nelson, Kahurangi Park, and Buller.

The front is forecasted to move north over the South Island during Friday before becoming slow moving over the lower North Island overnight Friday.

“A moist northwest airstream ahead of the front is expected to bring a period of heavy rain to Westland, Buller and the ranges of Northwest Nelson during Friday.

“Up to 180mm of rain is likely to accumulate about the ranges in a 15 hour period, with significant spillover into the headwaters of the Canterbury lakes and rivers.”

Metservice advises that this amount of rain will make rivers and streams rise rapidly, and could cause slips and surface flooding.

The severe weather warning issued at 8.28pm last night and is expected to be updated this morning.
