A high speed car chase and the arrest of a “high risk warrant” followed some smart work by an off-duty police officer in Richmond and cool driving by chasing police officers on Friday afternoon.

Sergeant Greg Beer of the Nelson police says they have been on the hunt for 23-year-old Dylan Sutton for the last month after he “cut off his bracelet and fled his place of residence”. Police had warrants for his arrest. including driving while disqualified and wilful damage.

Police arrested Sutton at around 3.50pm on Friday after the car he was in was cut off by one of two police cars involved in a high speed chase from Richmond. The chase ended about three kilometres south of Hope on  State Highway 6  when two police cars forced Sutton’s car off the road..

“The car was slowing down and the police officer managed to get in front of him and cut him off. I think he might have been running out of petrol,” Greg says.

Greg says Sutton was spotted by the off-duty police officer on Talbot St after he recognised his car. The officer called the duty officer but Sutton saw the police and fled and the pursuit followed.

“Two police cars were involved in th chase – a police car and a dog handler. I don’t know how fast the car was going – it was fast enough, it was a high speed chase.

“We arrested him – he is a high risk warrant,” Greg says. “We also arrested a female and she’s assisting with our investigations.”
