Cousins have won again, this time Josh and Louisa Denton taking home the Vodafone smart phone.
Nelson Weekly has been running a competition looking for the region’s best friends, after Nelson woman Meg Parfitt spent a week on a raft in Waitemata Habour so her friends could go on holiday to Fiji.
Last week’s winners were cousins born a day apart.
This week it was cousins who recreated a cute photo from 17 years ago.
Louisa and Josh Denton were photographed holding hands in front of the Nelson McDonald’s counter in 1999 and just over a month ago they went back to recreate the photo.
Louisa, 19, says the photo has always been very special to her.
“I don’t remember it being taken but I’ve always had it in my room.”
However, the pair say the photo was a funny one to recreate in such a public place.
“It felt a bit weird walking into McDonald’s, holding hands and then leaving,” says Louisa. “The white shirt bunched up under a blue dress is still definitely a good look.”
Josh, who had to don his uncle’s bush shirt and some sandals for the occasion, says McDonald’s was surprisingly busy for a Sunday morning.
“We were an odd looking pair and we were hoping no one would be there, but it was actually quite busy. Luckily, there was no one we knew.”
Louisa put the split, recreated photo on Instagram and Facebook and got an instant result.
“There were a lot of comments, everyone shared it and thought it was really cool.”
The outdoorsy pair have tramped the Abel Tasman, The Hackett, Mount Arthur and the Nelson Lakes, and as the oldest of a close knit group of cousins, take the rest on camping trips around the region with no parents allowed.
“We’ve always been into the same things,” says Josh. “It’s always been like that, really.”
Louisa’s mum, Althea Denton, says the pair are just as close as they were when they were young.
“Right from the word go they were so close, and Louisa is 6 months older so she was always very protective of Josh. In all the photos she’s got her arm around his shoulders and she was always looking out for him.”
Louisa says she was “so excited” when they found out they’d won the Vodafone smart phone.
