Pollen storm sweeps over Rabbit Island

It’s a sure sign that Spring is on its way and people at Rabbit Island got to see a “pollen storm” up close today.

The pollen comes from pine trees and collects on them until a gust of wind sends it swirling through the air.

It happens every Spring and for those near some of our region’s numerous pine forests it can be a regular sight. McGlashen Pharmacy owner Andrew McGlashen says while pollen does cause havoc with hay fever sufferers, pine pollen is actually quite mild.

“It doesn’t affect people too much, it is pollen from other plants that really affects them and we’re about to come into that busy time of year for people who suffer from hay fever.”
