Nelson duo score, Black Sticks earn medal chance

Nelson’s Anita McLaren and Kelsey Smith both got on the scoresheet as the New Zealand women’s Black Sticks comfortably beat Australia 4-2 in their Olympic hockey quarter-final in Rio this morning.
New Zealand opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Anita McLaren sent a penalty corner drag flick rocketing into the top of the net.
Midway through the second quarter the Kiwis doubled their lead from another penalty corner with Kelsey Smith getting a fine deflection on a shot from Kayla Whitelock.
While the Australians pulled one back, a goal each from Gemma Flynn and Olivia Merry made the game safe at 4-1 late in the fourth quarter.
New Zealand will play either Span or Great Britain in the semi-finals as their quest continues for the first ever Olympic medal for the Kiwis in women’s hockey.
