Nelson College man-up in the mud

It was a case of mission accomplished as Nelson College secured a semi-final spot in the UC Championship rugby competition with a 34-0 home victory over Roncalli College on Saturday.

Muddy conditions, caused by consistent rain throughout the week and the midweek Nelson derby with Waimea Combined, made for a tough watch for spectators.

Nelson’s biggest opposition was themselves, at times.

They looked to play razzle-dazzle rugby too often and were on the wrong end of the penalty count.

Big winger Leicester Faingaanuku scored twice to ensure the four-try bonus point was secured by halftime.

The cellar-dwellers were also more than competitive at the breakdown but lacked any punch in attack.

Nelson play Lincoln High School at home in their last round-robin game.

Two tries from Waimea Combined winger Culainn Stringer were not enough to get his team home against Shirley Boys’ High School.

Shirley’s strong first half was the catalyst for the 32-24 win in Christchurch on Saturday.
