Injuries, scrum a worry as Makos lose to Canterbury

Injuries to David Havili and Shannon Fizzell as well as replacement loosie Pete Samu will be a worry for the Tasman Makos after their 45-14 loss to Canterbury in the Mitre 10 Cup this afternoon.

Both David and Sahnnon left the game inside the first 15 minutes of kick off at Christchurch’s AMI Stadium while Pete was substituted with 10 minutes to play after coming on as a replacement

Three first half penalties from Marty Banks kept the Makos in  touch as they battled into a stiff breeze in the first half.

The Makos defence was resolute under major territorial pressure in the first half and they struggled mightily at scrum time.

Despite being dominated, Tasman only trailed 16-9 at halftime.

A try to right winger Tima Faingaanuku off a break from Mitchell Hunt, cut the score line to 19-14 with 28 minutes to play.

A try to Canterbury lock Dominic Bird kept Canterbury at arm’s length once again.

The Makos scrum continued to struggle against an experienced Canterbury forward pack.

Canterbury came home with a powerful finish, scoring three late tries to blow the score out to something which reflected their dominance over 80 minutes.

The Makos will host Taranaki this Saturday at 2.35pm at Trafalgar Park.
