Drivers urged to slow for winter conditions

Winter brings icy, snowy and gritty roads and the NZ Transport Agency are urging Nelson drivers to be extra careful for the rest of the week.

An area-wide winter driving warning is in place across Nelson and Tasman with shaded areas remaining icy until midday and later in some spots.

Nelson Tasman area warnings are in place because of snow and ice along the following roads:

  • SH63 St Arnaud to Rainbow Skifield
  • SH60 Upper Takaka to Riwaka
  • SH6 Hope Saddle

Drivers are being advised to slow down and leave more distance between vehicles to avoid any crashes.

“Build in extra time for the morning commute before the sun has had a chance to melt ice and slow down on grit the same as for ice,” says NZTA Journey Manager Lee Wright.
