The Nayland College Senior Baskeball team have been growing, dyeing and enjoying their hair while they still have it.

On Tuesday, the 14 players will have their heads shaved in front of the whole school alongside their coach Sam Dempster and assistant coach Tom Gargiulo.

The team have already raised over $2400, with 90 per cent of all donations being given to the Cancer Society and the other 10 per cent going towards tournament costs.

The shave, prompted by Tom is set to bring about some team bonding ahead of tournament week in Ashburton later this month and the boys couldn’t be more keen.

Captain Cullen Riley says there’s been a buzz around school and is expecting the Tuesday lunchtime shave to be a pretty big event.

“I don’t think you can be prepared to go completely bald to be honest,” says Cullen. “We’re gonna look different that’s for sure, our teams definitely going to have our own identity come tournament time but hey we look great already and the bit on top doesn’t make a difference.”

Team mate Cameron Aitken says he’s excited to get rid of his mop.bball 2

“I hate long hair so much and there’s no point wasting money on haircuts when you can just shave it off for charity and be done with it, I’m counting down the days.”

Assistant coach Tom, has done a shave for cancer before but says this time around he wanted to get more people involved.

“Cancer is something that has affected all of us in one way or another so I thought it would be a good team building activity to do right before South Islands and Daffodil day.

“The boys have already gone a little crazy dyeing their hair and being silly with it. Its all fun and is a great way to bring the boys together for a bigger cause.”

Tom says to start off with the goal was to raise a grand “but then we smashed it so we thought why not go hard and now we’re aiming for $5000.”
