Weather set to pack in mid-week

More rain and strong wind is on the horizon for Nelson.

A front is forecast to cross the South Island on Wednesday and the remainder of the country on Thursday.

The front is preceded by a very strong northerly flow and is expected to bring heavy rain to western and northern parts of both Islands.

Meteorologists are confident that rainfall amounts may exceed warning criteria for Buller, Nelson and northern Marlborough on Wednesday and early Thursday.

On Wednesday, northerly winds are expected to strengthen over the South Island and rise to gale, with a broad low risk of severe gales.
