Social Bubs proving very social

A new parents group, formed to help Nelson mums and dads with young children connect and create lasting relationships, has taken off after 80 mums attended the group’s first outing earlier this year.

Social Bubs was set up by two young mothers, Rachel Eggers and Catherine Jopson, who were finding it difficult to meet other young parents after moving to Nelson. The group held its first meeting at Founders Park on Mother’s Day weekend and Rachel says they were overwhelmed by the number of parents who attended.

“I’ve moved back to Nelson after living in Brisbane for six years and was finding it hard to connect with other young mothers,” Rachel says. “Catherine was in a similar situation, moving to Nelson with her husband who had come from here, so we decided to set up Social Bubs.

“We had a Mums Meet Mums function at Founders and 80 mums turned up, so obviously there was a need. There are a lot of young mums returning to Nelson or moving here from bigger cities and Social Bubs helps them meet other mums.

“We also held a Dads Day Out at Founders Brewery on the same day and about 30 dads turned up. They were only allowed one drink though because they had to look after the babies.”

Rachel says Social Bubs organises an activity every fortnight and last Friday they were invited to the Richmond Aquatic Centre for a free infants swimming lesson.
