Nelson runner Julian Matthews makes Olympics

Nelson 1500m runner Julian Matthews has been added to New Zealand’s Olympic squad for Rio.

The US-based 28-year-old will be one of three Kiwi runners to contest the blue riband event with former silver medal winner Nick Willis and Hamish Carson making it the first time New Zealand has three men in the event.

Julian has previous international experience having made the 1500m final at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014 and 16th in the event at the Beijing World Championships last year.
