Fresh powder for Rainbow Ski open day

This morning the Rainbow Ski Area opened its slopes for the first time this season and skiers, snowboarders and kids on toboggans made their way up to the snow.

We sent our Nelson Live reporter up the mountain to check it out.

With a fresh powder and 25cm of snow, the beginner and intermediate slopes were open and humming but the T bar remains closed, needing an extra 10cm dump before the masters can go crazy on the larger slope and park jumps.

Rainbow Ski Area’s Matt Alcock says he is stoked the slopes are finally covered in snow and open for everyone to have fun on.

“Its been a very strange winter for all of New Zealand, five days ago this looked like the middle of summer and we all came to work saying, ‘what is mother nature doing’ so when we finally got the snow it was like being a kid at the ultimate christmas, I kept walking around excitedly going, ‘we’ve got snow!'”

A full day pass for an adult is $80, children are $39 and students are $55 but the field also offer half day passes, package deals, lessons and equipment hire.

The ski field is open from 9am to 4pm and each morning a conditions update is posted on the website,
