A car ended up on its roof after colliding with another vehicle in Wakefield this morning.

The accident, which took place just after 10am between Arrow St and Whitby Way, involved a driver in his 70s who was from Christchurch.

Travelling southbound, the driver appears to have clipped a parked car, sending his own vehicle into a roll and landing on the roof.

A Police officer, who had been further up the road dealing with a speeding infringement, was on the scene immediately after hearing the collision.

After concerns the man in the rolled vehicle may have been trapped, the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Brigade was alerted to the scene but in the end the Jaws of Life were not used.

Two other officers, an ambulance and a paramedic also attended the scene.

Police are still investigating what caused the driver to collide with the parked car.

The driver was taken to Nelson Hospital for observation.

Both lanes were opened again around 10:50am.
