Throwback Thursday: Nelson College for Girls

Established in 1883, the school was under the guidance of principal Kate Edger, who was the first woman to receive a degree at university in New Zealand.

Besides Kate Edgar, several of the college’s faculty were extremely prominent including the politician, Ethel McMillan, Richard Nunns the musician and the artist Dorothy Kate Richmond.

Notable alumnae include nutritionist and medical researcher Muriel Bell, writer and journalist Kate Evelyn Isitt, singer Courteney Love and YHA(NZ) founder Cora Wilding.

The school’s five competitive ‘houses’ are named Dun, Maitai, Maungatapu, Waimea and the boarding house, Whangamoa after local landmarks, the winning house at the end of the year receives the Whangamoa Shield.
