Nelson police are trying to find the cause of a “strange odour” coming from one of the cubicles in the public toilets in the Richmond Mall on Tuesday.

Police and fire fighters were called to the mall at around 1pm on Tuesday after a cleaner noticed the unusual odour coming from a cubicle in the men’s toilet opposite Farmers. The toilets were closed off while police and fire fighters investigated the scene but senior sergeant Blair Hall says the source of the smell remains a mystery.

Blair says the cleaner became concerned when they “felt a bit dizzy” after entering the toilet and noticing the strange odour. Police were still looking for a man the cleaner reported seeing leaving the cubicle to try and get to the bottom of the incident.

“There was no evidence of anything in the toilet so we still don’t know what caused the strange odour,” Blair says. “It could be a cleaning product or drugs or anything – we don’t know.”

Blair says the cleaner saw a man leave the toilet at the time but he may not even be related to the incident.
