Severe thunderstorm watch still in place

There’s plenty more rain to come.

Metservice say the region’s Severe Thunderstorm Watch will remain in place until 5pm on Saturday at least.

The updated watch issued earlier this morning once again includes Nelson, Marlborough and Buller.

The active front that has been raining down on the region is expected to move northeast over much of cental and northern New Zealand today and overnight tonight.

Metservice say the risk of thunderstorms is still high ahead of and with the front.

“A few of these thunderstorms may be SEVERE bringing damaging wind squalls in excess of 110km/h and possibly one or two damaging tornados.”

“These squally winds and possible tornados may cause some structural damage, including damage to trees and power lines, and make driving hazardous. If any tornados occur, they will only affect very localised areas.”

Buller and northwest Nelson were predicted to be affected from early this morning morning until mid-afternoon while the northern Marlborough Sounds is set to be struck during the afternoon only for anyone heading down the sounds for the weekend.
