Nelson Giants fall to Sharks 91-85

The Nelson Giants’ top four NBL hopes took a big hit as they fell 91-85 to the Southland Sharks at the Trafalgar Centre tonight.

The visitors rallied for 23 points down midway through the second quarter to control the game well down the stretch.

The Giants attack again suffered from a mid-game slump and lacked the speed or passing needed at crucial times.

They also missed injured youngster Finn Delany.

His attack and rebounding could not have been replicated by anyone else and it showed.

The Giants had a 16-0 run to start the second quarter but struggled to get the rebounds late in the game and their shooting went cold.

The result means the Giants are in fifth and will need to rely on some Shark slip ups to make the semifinals.

Nick Kay led the Sharks with 22 points while Cowels added 21 for the Giants before fouling out in the final minute.

The Giants host the winless Hawke’s Bay Hawks next Saturday night.
