Nelson musicians will have the chance to compete for a spot on the hottest gig in town.
Snaparock is coming to the Trafalgar Centre in September, featuring a line-up of Aussie rockers. But opening the show will be a local act and Nelson Weekly readers will have the chance to decide who it will be.
A competition between promoters of the festival and Nelson Weekly, Waimea Weekly and nelsonlive.co.nz will see local musicians enter the competition to play at the concert. Local readers can then go online and cast a vote for their favourite. The three acts with the most votes will then be put in front of Dynosaurs band member Graham Bidstrup, who will pick the overall winner.
Event manager Aly Cook says it’s a great way to build excitement ahead of the concert. “It’s going to be a huge event so it’s great that we can give a local act this kind of opportunity.”
Acts have until the end of May — New Zealand Music Month — to enter the competition, with the voting process open during the month of June. To enter, bands need to submit a blurb about themselves, why people should vote for them and a YouTube link to a music video or them performing. The winning band will also receive a voucher from Begg’s Musicworks.
Aly says interest in the two-day Snapafest, of which Snaparock is the first event, has been huge. “We’re really happy with the interest and we’re getting a lot of people from outside Nelson enquiring about it.”
